Community-led Climate Adaptation Solution Toolkit 2026

Community-led Climate Adaptation Solution Toolkit 2026 brings together three years of community-led climate adaptation work implemented by Doh Eain across Myanmar. Developed between 2023 and 2025 with the Climate Adaptation Championship (CAC) approach, the collection documents the approaches, methodologies, and solutions co-created with residents of informal settlements and peri-urban communities facing increasing climate risks.

The CAC approach was first established through Doh Eain’s collaboration with the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA) in 2023, exploring how local communities could identify climate hazards and develop their own adaptation responses. Building on this foundation, the GenCIVIC projection 2025 introduced a stronger gender and social inclusion lens, supporting community champions and Neighbourhood Network members in Yangon and Taunggyi to address flooding, water scarcity, and extreme heat. The Urban CAC Living Lab, implemented in collaboration with IIED in the same year, further refined and scaled the approach through co-designed interventions focused on flood management, waste management, placemaking, and nature-based solutions.

Together, these toolkits demonstrate how local knowledge, participatory design, and community ownership can translate climate adaptation from an abstract concept into practical action. They offer lessons, tools, and replicable solutions for practitioners, community organisations, donors, and urban actors seeking to strengthen resilience in vulnerable communities.

Doh Eain’s Earthquake Response Final Report

On 28 March 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction across Mandalay, Sagaing, Southern Shan State, and surrounding areas. Thousands of households were displaced, while homes, public infrastructure, cultural heritage sites, and essential services were severely damaged.

In response, Doh Eain launched the Reach, Relieve and Recover (RRR) Campaign, a community-led earthquake response initiative grounded in Human-Centered Design (HCD), conflict-sensitive programming, and locally led recovery approaches. Working closely with grassroots organisations, volunteers, and members of the Neighbourhood Network, the campaign supported affected communities through integrated relief, recovery, reconstruction, and resilience-building activities.

Between April 2025 and April 2026, the Reach, Relieve, Recover Campaign supported 22,984 individuals across Mandalay, Sagaing, and Nyaung Shwe: mobilising $598,366 through a coalition of UN agencies, foundations, corporate donors, and private supporters.

The campaign demonstrated what becomes possible when trusted local networks are resourced and activated, not just in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but across the full arc of recovery. See the full report below.

Colours of Recovery: Commemorative Art Book

Colours of Recovery is a commemorative art book that brings together artworks and reflections from 23 community members in Amarapura, Mandalay.

Developed through art-based workshops, the pieces reflect a range of lived experiences: capturing personal emotions, memories, and moments of recovery following the March 2025 earthquake. Each artwork offers a different perspective on loss, resilience, and the process of rebuilding.

Through these expressions, Colours of Recovery highlights the importance of creating spaces for reflection and connection, and the role of psychosocial support in supporting individuals and communities as they continue to heal.

Hear Us Storybook

Hear Us is a storybook that brings together 20 community stories, organised into two sections: survivors and supporters.

The stories reflect a wide range of lived experiences, from small business owners and LGBTQIA+ community members to pregnant and breastfeeding women, community leaders, civil society organisation (CSO) members, as well as education and healthcare workers. Each story offers a different perspective on loss, resilience, and collective recovery after the March 2025 Earthquake.

Through these voices, Hear Us highlights the vital role of psychosocial support in helping individuals and communities navigate the emotional impact of disaster and rebuild with strength and dignity.

Stories of Climate Adaptation Champions in Yangon and Taunggyi

WE Storybook: Climate Adaptation Champions 2025

Through the project “Gender-sensitive Climate-responsive Initiatives for Vulnerable Informal Communities in Yangon and Taunggyi (Gen-CIVIC YGN & TGI)”, Doh Eain has supported women to take the lead in shaping climate action within their own neighbourhoods. As part of this work, we developed a community-led solutions toolkit and a storybook to document local experiences and learning.

We Storybook 2025 is a collection of 20 community stories gathered through workshops and in-depth interviews, conducted with the support of Neighbourhood Network members.

Together, these stories offer insight into how local knowledge, collaboration, and collective effort can strengthen resilience and support long-term adaptation.

WE Storybook: Climate Adaptation Champions 2023

Developed as part of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) phase of Doh Eain’s Climate Adaptation Championship (CAC) with support from the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA), the WE Storybook brings together stories from communities experiencing the impacts of flooding and water scarcity in their daily lives.

Through interviews with women, men, older persons, people with disabilities, pregnant women, caregivers, and community-based organisations, the publication explores how climate risks affect different groups in different ways.

Featuring 16 stories collected by local partner organisations, the storybook offers a people-centred perspective on climate resilience and provides insight into the lived experiences, challenges and strengths that shape adaptation at the community level.
